So excited I was, during the press releases of Basel/SIHH, that I immediately assumed I was going to buy a Speed Black 3.
But then the grains of sand in the hour glass dropped and I spent more time thinking about it. Since the SB3 is a boutique piece, no discount. And at full MSRP, it just didn't seem like any sort of purchase I needed to make.
So I started to think about why I wanted it: I liked the all black and white look of the piece, it was limited edition, I like the Mille Miglia's a whole lot.
Then I started to think of reasons why not to buy it: Way overpriced, no bracelet, not very limited in production numbers.
I was on the fence. Then, in a stroke of luck, another watch came along. It was far less than 1/2 price. Had an all black case, was also limited, chronograph, etc.
So I ultimately ended up putting a Breitling on my wrist. A Skyland Avenger (limited edition) BLACK STEEL:
Looking back, I don't think I could have made a smarter choice. I do very much like Chopard and where they are trying to go with their sport watches, but the price tag on the SB3 was just way too much for what they were offering. Long term, the Breitling Skyland in BlackSteel just seems like a cooler watch, more usable, and a lot less money.
If the SB3's ever surface for .5 value, maybe I'll pick one up. After all, that's around what I paid for my Mille Miglia 2005 LE, with GMT, Chrono and Bracelet.
