Nice! limited edition vs. limited production

Hi Alberto,

nice!
It really doesn?t hide the 60?s design
The case reminds a bit of Piaget and Universal Geneve models, particularly the early "Golden Shadow" of the latter.

While vintage GP pieces are not comparable to what GP does today, there was a number of rare pieces.
The reasons why certain models were not made in larger quantities are different: sometimes not more dials, cases or movements were available, sometimes it didn?t meet the demands of the market as expected and sometimes a model turned out to be more difficult to produce as expected. All this can cause a specific model to be produced in a small number of pieces only and GP, although the production total was a lot higer than today, ever was a small manufacturer. Therefore production runs are not that large and many models were made in a rather small quantity.

The limited edition refers to the intended marketing and usually comes with a fixed number, such as 100 pieces of this or 50 pieces of that model. Usually these are created for a special reason or to commemorate a given event and thus do have some "context".
The limited production is simply not doing more, either because a piece is particularly difficult to produce (like GP?s Opera models, the Three Gold Bridges Tourbillons or the earlier Laureato models) or it needs a movement or special part that is not available in larger quantities (the Lemania manual wind chronographs). Sometimes it?s just the demand; such as the ref. 47620 ultra-thin, which was made in very low quantities either and not even included in catalogues and publications prior to 2004.

So the main difference is a limited edition to be a made in a given number of pieces for a specific reason or purpose, while a limited production usually does not have such a "context".

For the vintage ones a limited production model is not that unusual; it?s been not a huge annual production then, but many hundreds of different models and most of them in production for a rather short period. So each model and variant (and it must be thousands in the 1960?s) was made in likewise low numbers.

Enjoy your watch!

Greetings,

Peter
