I thought I was welll past the impulse purchase stage. You know - plan, research, contemplate, research some more, ponder, have a scotch, THEN buy.
Well, a recent local purchase opportunity presented that had a rather immediate 'drop everything and make this happen' effect.
The making things happen would require some sacrifice from the existing rotation, however.
The first departure was my beloved Omega AT 8500. It was selected for sale because a) it is a watch I could manage to more easily replace down the road, and b) there had been some overlap in the rotation between it and my equally beloved Grand Seiko GMT - a watch that would be a good deal harder to replace:
Next to go was my vintage Rolex 1803 in white gold. Much harder to part with this piece, because the chances of replacing it are long indeed. But consolation was found in the fact that my white metal vintage dress watch selections remained pretty strong (2 Omegas and an IWC), and that it would be funding the purchase of a contemporary gold dress watch.
So without further delay, I'll intoduce the new arrival: H. Moser & Cie Mayu:
This is about as close as I have come to a purely emotional watch purchase. From the moment that this brand first entered the fringes of my awareness, I was deeply smitten. Sure, I've read all I could find on the 'net about the brand, models and movements - but I've known from the first that this brand was "me" and apart from the stunning perpetual, no model more so than the Mayu.
There are few watches that I look at and say "I wouldn't change a thing" - and this is one of them. I can well understand why it won't appeal to all (which watch would?). It won't even register with the sports watch crowd - too boring. And traditionalists may be reluctant to embrace the oversize 12, oversize font and oversize subsecond dial (features which I find combine and balance particularly well). But for me, this piece is "it", "the bomb", "insert trite metaphor here" - at anywhere near or even twice the price.
I generally don't post a watch until I've had it for a while - as just-bought-it! euphoria can impair one's perspetive. But euphoria won out. I'll let you know how things progress over time with this piece, and close for now with a couple pics from the vendor:
Thanks for tuning in.
