Introducing the Panerai PAM673 Marina Militare Limited Edition - 47mm Luminor 1950

PANERAI PAM673 LUMINOR 1950 3 DAYS ACCIAIO – 47mm

THE WORDS “MARINA MILITARE” ENGRAVED ON THE BLACK DIAL OF THE NEW SPECIAL EDITION RECALL THE HISTORIC PURCHASER OF PANERAI’S WATCHES, CONFERRING A DECIDEDLY VINTAGE CHARACTER ON THE NEW PANERAI CREATION.

As precision instruments used for special missions and covered by military secrecy, some watches made by Panerai in the 1940s had no indication on the dial apart from the hour markers. But other models carried names referring to the luminous substance used on the dial – Radiomir or Luminor – or of the institution which had commissioning the watches, the Italian Navy. Inspired by these is the new Luminor 1950 3 Days, a special edition of 1,000 units, with the inscription “MARINA MILITARE” on the dial, distinguished by its pure lines and strict fidelity to the characteristics of the historic models.

The classic black dial of the new Luminor 1950 3 Days is supremely clear and readable, thanks to its design, its sandwich structure and its use of Grade A Super-LumiNova®. The case, 47 mm in diameter, is made of AISI 316L stainless steel with a polished finish and has the same proportions as the watch created by Panerai in the late 1940s, with its elegantly cusped caseband and the lever bridge device protecting the winding crown. Like the vintage models, which had crystals made of polymethyl methacrylate, the dial of the new Luminor is protected by a slightly domed Plexiglas® crystal, while the back has a large sapphire glass porthole enabling the Manufacture movement to be admired.

The P.3000 hand-wound mechanical calibre, with a power reserve of three days (two spring barrels), has a diameter of 16½ lignes, a large size which has its origin in that of the movements which were fitted to the historic Panerai models. Solid and reliable, the movement has three satinfinished bridges protecting the movement and a further bridge with twin supports for the balance wheel 13.2 mm in diameter (vibrating at a frequency of 3 Hz). The P.3000 calibre also has the device for rapid time zone adjustment: a star wheel with 12 teeth and a small spring clutch enable the hour hand to be moved forwards or backwards in increments of one hour at a time without interfering with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch.

The brown strap of the new Luminor 1950 3 Days (PAM00673) is the Ponte Vecchio, made and treated in traditional Tuscan leather workshops, with the OP logo imprinted on it and contrasting beige stitching. Inside the elegant pear wood box in which the watch is presented there is a second rubber strap, a spare Plexiglas® crystal, a steel screwdriver and a personalised certificate with the serial number of the Special Edition. The watch is waterresistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres).
