Gold Watch and Bracelet
With a little effort, you should be able to find a very nice vintage gold watch and integral bracelet for around the same price, or somewhat less than the price of a similar strap watch. I purchased a mint Ref 3514 for under 6K with an immaculate bracelet which I will not be able to wear out in my lifetime (the kids are on their own).
Oftentimes these bracelts are not in good shape, so you should examine it carefully, also note the length, since they can easily be shortened-but not lengthened. This could be a concern should it be sized for your mother and you have a larger wrist. Patek Geneva can replace mesh or tiled bracelets on vintage watches, but this is often an expensive proposition so it's best to purchase the watch with a good bracelet.
In all, there are many Pateks out there with integral bracelets in good shape which present a great watch at an attractive price.
