And it seems like what you wrote is exactly what happened to me......to the date. I too recently caught the vintage bug. And I too started the journey with a 16750. I was looking for a good 1680 red submariner for Christmas this year and instead I stumbled upon a terrific 6263 Big Red and bought that instead! It was not cheap but I thought the quality was worth it. I guess we all go down the same path!
