Rolex

My (very) paradoxical ultimate watch

Dear Friends,

This post does not aim at being polemic, it just reflects my own feelings. (Please forgive my Frenchman English)

I have owned quite a lot of watches, including PP, VC, Breguet, AP, and a dozen Rolexes and Omegas.

Curiously I now find myself perfectly happy with… a Tudor !

Let me compare with Rolex, the obvious competitor (actually from – in a way – the same company).

As far as I can tell, the quality of the case is comparable to the one of a Rolex and the specs of the movement are the same. Accuracy is, in practice, equally good.

The Tudor is much less expensive for a comparable « service ». It is not only a good point about the amount of money spent but also about the “rightness” of the entire object: I like the feeling of paying for something real and not to “buy a dream”. (I like dreams but they cannot be bought.)

I deeply prefer the «symbol » (the « Image ») reflected by the Tudor. In a Rolex, everything seems to say « look, I am such a rich man's watch ». You might be happy with this and I respect that. But, to me, in this collapsing and fragile World, this is a bit indecent.

The Tudor is less heavy, less « bling », less big, less ostentatious. It somehow « makes sense ». Everything sounds right, with appropriate proportions. I love this feeling.

The shape of the Tudor is slightly vintage, much more delicate and refined. Even the strap is nicer (thinner) than the Nato one I have on my Omega.

Maybe I am the only one, but I don’t feel like wearing anymore my other watches. To my eyes, all of them now appear as “fake” to me. With this little Tudor – nicely designed, waterproof, magnetic field proof, with a great power reserve and a very ingenious and robust movement – I think I have rediscovered authenticity. Of the kind money cannot buy but only your heart can reconnect with.

I just wish they change their horrible advertisings. We would like a product-based communication, not those ridiculous images of famous sportsmen (who are all actually wearing Richard Mille tourbillons)! Evading this “bling-bling Jetset” madness would precisely be what we expect from Tudor.  Worst, they are now supporting the Dakar Rally (perfect example of neocolonial game ignoring climate change, local populations and biodiversity issues)! Tudor will be my favorite company … once they have fired the communication team  !
