Oh, Art, where to begin!?!...
First, though, a question: what is the point? What. Is. The. Point??? After seeing the close-ups of Fabrizio's 'Volutes et Arabesques' Calatrava, everything else is just lemonade! Sure, every one of Fabrizio's special Pateks is ...special... but that one - pfffft!
Otherwise, WOTW has hit the nail on the head when he says that it's almost always about the dial. Great dial + great movement=Heaven. Great dial + mediocre movement=still pretty good. But great movement + poor dial=an outrage. Poor dial + poor movement=a complete waste of time, effort and money.
Sticking to the rules, though, and picking only some of those bought solely for the dial and/or hands:
A brace of PSM Shimodas; for the hands, mostly; for the dials also; for the conceit, not a little.
The Jaquet Droz Paillonee; take a bow, Ms Porchet.
The AP G&PS; is it possible to find a purer dial for something intrinsically complex? What a magnificent counterpoint; what humility.
The no-date 4 line Sub: it does what it says on the tin - no more, no less - and the dial reflects that fact.
UJ - any questions?
Vintage Omega
The list goes on. BUT: if dials are your thing, then go out and have them made to your preference:
The Habring 'Australis' 1 of 2, the dial made in homage to an SIHH special Habring chrono of a few years earlier.
The Klings Open Version Piece Unique with silk dial.
The Sarpaneva 'Uniki'.
Thanks for a great theme, Art! HAGWE everyone.
Cheers,
pplater.
