. . . never get the respect they deserve.
All about the bass flute?
;-)
Re ensemble guitar playing: so many to choose from. Pentangle's pair . . .
Pre-Pentangle
. . . deserve mention, for sure.
To my way of thinking Jaco's a musician's bassist, kinda like Kenny Burrell's a musician's guitarist. Their playing doesn't strike ordinary folks at first, second, or fifth listening as extraordinary, but trained musicians get them intuitively. The list of greats is endless. Who today remembers Rick Grech?
Bill Wyman rarely got the respect he deserved from critics. Turns out recording engineers were largely to blame. Listen to a recently remastered mono mix . . .
. . . of Get Off of My Cloud, then compare with ubiquitous stereo:
Bill's credited with creating the fret-less bass. Having heard the Stones with and without him, they're really quite different bands. By public accounts, Charlie chose Darrell Jones to replace Bill, which rings true on account of Charlie's jazz sensibilities, but Brian Jones picked Bill due to his facility with blues. Purportedly, Stu Cook was in line to replace Wyman; that would've created a sound truer to their previous form, in my humble opinion.
Thumpin?

Cover your ears, Padj!
. . . not the treble."
