and a friend who has power of attorney in the event you ever lose, even briefly, the ability to make decisions, and second, you must be able to absolutely trust the judgement of the friend or relative to whom you've entrusted that power. As it happens, my friend failed on all counts, and was consequently ill-served. The cost to his bank account was substantial; the loss of freedom, incalculable.
