If you need someone to wear the Dato for you for a while I could be persuaded taking this burden off your shoulders...

Very nice pics of the 5650! Your posts are starting to change my mind a little about Aquanaut series in general...

.....first......I have to give the Dato the benefit of the doubt. Its been pooled againt a watch that virtually all of mine would suffer in comparison. So, i do see that i need to allow some proper wrist time and genuinely look at the Datograph in its own right rather than in comparison with another...that would be the fair thing.


Regarding the Aquanaut.....i think it is a really cool watch. The new models are killers....try one on....

We discussed quickly about it back then and I expressed how it pleased me, on every levels.

Not so easy to wear formally of course....but casually its perfect...and actually fills a big hole in my collection on Patek sporty.

and you still love it. In fact, you are having a hard time taking it off. While I am quite sure that that frantic desire to wear only this one watch will dissipate there is no question you have found a new piece that will be with you-joyfully-for a very long time. You will treasure getting back to it after it has been in the safe for a time. I congratulate you. While we all have had that special feeling for a new watch when first obtained, not all of them live up to our own hype weeks down the road-and when worn exclusively. This one has for you.

For you to place it above the 5370P says it all. I actually tried Kamal Rostov's 5164A a few nights ago and was surprised how well it fitted on my wrist. I had tried the same model years ago and it was too large (and my wrist has definitely not grown!) Immediately, I thought to myself, perhaps I should have ordered the 5650G when I had the chance to, so I fully understand your passion for this watch. For you to be able to rank your watches in a top 5 shows how important each watch is for you. I do the same with my small collection but then again, I am used to rank everything in my life

Almost a common watch on this forum!
Its quite funny how this forum can so often create an illusion of "common". In the wild, I rarely ever see a standard Nautilus....maybe once or twice ever. Yet, on this forum, its like everyone and their dog owns one!

Another good example is 5131R. So many around here. Best, Volker

and sense I am not the only one to enjoy this piece to this extent. So far at the moment m I am considering not keeping much of what is otherwise in my humble collection.... but will wait a bit and see if the honeymoon wears off in due time. It has certainly raised the bar considerably for me which actually relieves me from many wishful thoughts!

Every sentiment you express I share with you Joe. It is a marvel. A rare feeling but a superb one. Hope the joy will stay with you for a long time!

Adding it to my collection required some serious consideration. And yet, while the marriage is still quite fresh, the watch elicits an emotional reaction from me far more powerful than that of some other pieces which were meaningfully easier purchase decisions. I still can't definitively describe why...and I'm OK with that 😀

In fact it took me two weeks after Basel before I spoke to my AD requesting one. At Basel, I was obsessed with the 5131p. It was all I could see. After Basel, I slowly started to see other watches and “woke up” to the 5650g. Once I paid attention, I realised I really wanted one. However, I could not have predicted just how much I would love it. It far exceeds what I expected. With the 5370p, I saw it and totally loved it. I knew I wanted it immediately. Once I got it, I knew it was the right decision. An incredible Watch that met my high expectation. With the 5650, the outcome was very different. I expected it to be fantastic but as you say, it elicits a reaction way beyond what one might expect.

the moment it was revealed in a press release I immediately contacted my AD expressing my interest in acquiring one. It must have been within the hour of the release.
To me the idea of an AR release cased in a sporty watch from Patek was a homerun. Especially since I had tried the 5164 and knew it would be a good wear on the wrist. Had it been a case size and shape not previously been produced perhaps I would have had an additional moment of hesitation. I was quite pleased initially to see the overall response seemed to be mixed as I reasoned it would increase my chances of being allocated one. Once I saw it in the real it was above any expectation I had. And it still grows on me even after all these months!

...your last post about it explaining the reasons why was crystal clear. But to that extent I would not have expected !

It is funny to know that you were quite hesitant and might not have ordered it! You must have had a horological angel (wearing a Patek advanced research reference) watching over you ! LOL !

Would love to hear your comments regarding the terminator vs 5131P when you have worn the 5131P for three weeks.

I have a good idea how you might feel.

Although you would adore the enamel dial and love the heft of the 5131P, you would still prefer the Terminator because of its innovative technologies.

Shall we have another bet on my prediction ?
