but the pen conversion idea is good too.

so its a keeper. i dont mind a opium pipe too, probably more interesting then a watch!!
best, Horo
I sold the first mechanical watch I ever bought, GO PanoLunar SS, 6 months after... LOL
But I do get waht you are saying Tyler.
i actually believe that horofatigue comes in cycles, and may actually be a good thing. i have survived 3 cycles as far as i can tell, and been back "srtonger then ever". after each cycle, i move up the "value chain", and have my collecting ethos refined and revamped, and i would like to say i have now a more horologically fulfilling collection.
i was really into cars, when you are here, i will show you my humble collection. now i am over it, and the latest from Maranello doesnt excite as much as the latest from MBF. whats next...pens, or as some Purists would call it, writing instruments? there is some sort of collecting bug in all of us, and sometimes it lead to Greenspan defined irrational exuberance, and we over consume on a horodiet. so we need to lose some fats, and become fit again. thats my 2.5 censt, taxes included.
Best, Horo

Cheers

On the first day of SIHH I was as usual feeling eager to see new watches. I entered the Palexpo, dazzled by the watches in the windows and the also exquisitely selected receptionists at each booth - I was ticking along like a lubrication-free, high-beat silicon escapement.
By the end of the first day of SIHH I was happy to have seen many new watches. And I was chuffed since during the day various CEOs, directors and managers of all and sundry watch brands said hello and exchanged pleasantaries, some even implored me to take a look at their novelties. At SIHH you feel like a Panerai special edition in ceramic composite with ADLC coating - widely sought after.
***Fast forward to last day***
On the last day at the fair I didn't want to wake up. But it didn't really matter since I couldn't sleep, hounded as I was in my dreams by monstrous tourbillons with crunching cages and sharp, wolf's teeth. I dreamt of thunderous strikes of imaginary minute repeaters echoing across barren lands, interrupted only by stomping column wheels charging across chasing down some poor escape watch enthusiast.
Once I was inside the accursed Palexpo, I did my best to walk with my eyes down to the floor, hoping and praying no one would see me; but despite walking like that the entire day I don't remember what the carpet looks like because my head was full of you-know-what. Because I had to shake another hand of yet another individual with a name card that was remotely horologically linked, and have that person ask me "WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FAIR?", I would have taken the longest, patinated and hand-made watch strap I could find and strangled myself.

Your suggestion 1 is in motion. I am wanting to thin my small to begin with collection down to maybe 7 or 8. Your suggestion 2 is good as well. Am watching from afar, seeing good buddies continuing to enjoy the addiction and being silently (well maybe not so silently
critical of the marketing extentions coming out but respecting that while I have my views and tastes, so do others and in doing so, I think there is still some hope for given the likes of the Zeitwerk Striker, PLM, new Urwerk (soon to be released various extentions as well given what we have seen in the past), the new Piaget can;t remember what, PSM's still great QP and his very nice new SM2 movement, the fact that I am still fascinated with the Trad Fusee Tourbi and the Haldimann and oh.. the very nice stuff from DeBethune.
As for suggestion 4, will definitely be waiting but admittedly, enjoying less or perhaps, a lot more selectively these days.
Thanks for chiming in.
never ever crossed my mind such an unfortnate thing to have happened .....
like to retract my revious post, in all respect to Nico ..... and my apologies
Hope everything is fine with him and the family
As much as I don't want to sound too idealistic, the commercial aspect of the whole thing really just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
And yet, watches are watches and we love them regardless. To create a piece out of pure love is unrealistic, yes?
It's a chicken and egg situation.
If companies didn't put out "novelties" year in, year out, we'd have nothing to talk about... or bash for that matter... and we may all lose touch completely. Foras can be such fragile things.
Anyway, I can totally sympathize with Arthur. And with age, one becomes really skeptical after having seen things of this nature for far too long... hey, this hobby is no different from any other endeavor and a lot of parallel thinking can be done based on one's life's experiences.
So I sift through all the press releases, go with my impressions and assess them for what they are and almost always, I find myself going back to the classics. It's a safe haven from all this confusion.
Of course, I can't say that I don't want to be confused from time to time
Horofatigue is what Andrew described it about members leaving the watch scene for good.
We ain't there yet, even Arthur, I hope. So it ain't that terminal yet
if not cured, will lead to one leaving the scene totally.
the purpose of this thread is to establish come commonilty in symptoms and the respective reactions to them. we have secured varied opinions, but largely it boils to to slow down, take a double take on what we have, and rejij collection. what i really hope, at least for Arthur my friends, is that he DOES NOT go into horocoma, and like you said, "leave the scene"
Best, Horo
the absurdity of some of the novelties that we see out there that people try to ply as "good" will be enough of a come-on to avert horocoma.
because it's something that we can discuss for better or for worse.
i think a prevailing "blah" flavor more than "yuck" will do it big time for those on the way to horocoma.
but if you have enough of the latter, lots of opinions to be traded.
it's when SIHH or BAselworld(?)become boring that people may totally leave the scene.
as to making them strap on something new... well, that's tough... what we can only do is help them endure enough to make them stay on their own path to rediscovery.
we can only do so much with what is out there. we're prisoners to what the manufactures will put out.
but if we're unable to sustain the passion in these foras, it's going to be very difficult.
1) one remedy then might be to encourage more knowledgeable lurkers to participate.
2) AND maybe more GTGs.
3) AND so when we're in for a boring year, no harm in rediscovering the classics, icons and iconoclasts and doing a feature on them every so often to remind us about the times when it was more about the watch/craft rather than the money (if that were at all possible).
again, all about sustaining the friendship and the "intellectual" discourse more than the actual offerings that's going to help us stay the course.
i got tired. 5 years. but TP was always there to sustain my interest... enough to go thinking about buying again and putting photography on hold for just a little while
eventually, the quality of "us" is what's going to prevent fatigue turn into coma.
