I told them they could each pick out any all-steel Rolex they wanted. (No precious metal, no diamonds). One chose a 31mm Datejust with light pink dial and the other chose a 34mm oyster perpetual (which is basically identical in look and function to a 34mm Airking her mother has worn for years).
Both were thrilled to make their own choice to their personal taste and happy that they are dated to their graduation year. They also had fun helping each other make a decision about which the other should choose. I say this because I do think they would have liked a vintage watch dated to their birth year, but the really loved picking something out themselves to suit their own style. Maybe they’ll get a vintage birth year watch down the track on their own, but this approach worked well for now.
