Gilt refers to the gold writing on the dial which does include silver as such it two color gilt.

4 line is simply 4 lines of text above 6 o'clock there are models with two lines of text usually you don't call out two lines but you do 4 lines.

Chapter ring is the out side circle on the dial were the index markers are withing the circle vs the index markers reach the end of the dial

Gilt is also a way to define an era for Rolex as gilt dials ended approx 1966 then they went to matt dials.  Gilt dials also had glossy black paint and the gilt is actually below the black paint rather than on top as it is put on the dial prior and the black is not painted in those negative areas so when you look at the dial from the side the paint profile drops down like a crater outlining the text.

I think the tulip crown were only produced in 61, if I'm not mistaken.

1961 is correct. Not too many around so hard to say never with Rolex.

4 liners 5512 is one of the most sought after sub. Yours is simply gorgeous.

mine is only a 2 liner with same tulip crown.

A Tropical dial I assume? Nicely and smoothly faded.

I have seen a few tropical dials over the years but most look like they had peeled off over time with very rough surface- like dial (like the road tar !). And yours (to my amaturish eyes at least) looks smooth “to touch”. Wonder if there is any reason to these differences? Anyone?

i hv not scientific reason why my tropicaldial is smooth and even . Each dial change color differently. Mine just happens to "AGED" perfectly.

Your particular example is wonderful! I wish I could find one in such a condition and same characteristics some day. Not easy I know! But of course a jewel in any Rolex Submariner collection well worth hunting for.

The hunt is always long and luck need to be on your side.  I am very happy to the set.  while they are very close they have a very differnt feel unlike some other watches in my collection which are mirror duplicates.

... gloss dial, gilt, chapter ring and 4 lines epitomizes the spirit of the first crown guards Submariner. It is one of the grails of a Sub collection in my opinion. A version I have been coveting for long and very elusive to me as they are very very rare down here where I live. May be someday I´ll be lucky enough to find one like yours which looks in a superlative condition!

It is true the 5512 gilt chapter 4 line has a lot of charm but the 2 line chapter is a great also.  B0th are hard to find in great condition.  I would also say the same of most gilt even non chapter when in pristine condition are fetching a very high price as there are fewer and fewer pieces as they are all finding homes and the collectors are not selling.

... 5512 I like the four lines best. I also love the first series with chapter ring. I already own a 5512 two lines with chapter ring, but its dial is a so called "tiger" with patina.
I would love to find a completely pristine gloss, gilt, chapter ring four lines, and I know it is not easy and the are costly, but it will be the watch that will fill my heart!
