Has anyone noticed that the names on one or two of the Rolex models sometimes don't have a clear meaning? Not to be critical, but Land Dweller as a name sound great on the superficial level. But once you peel away that superficial layer, and look deeper, the decision to name a watch "Land Dweller" is not very obvious to me.
1. Sea Dweller, this name suggests that this watch is very happy to spend time in the sea and is both logical and meaningful, as the watch is definitely a dive watch! Good choice of a name! I think we all agree this one is very logical.
2. Sky Dweller. Sky Dweller implies that this watch is used in the sky. If I told the watch's name was "sky dweller" you would assume there was something sky or air related. Possibly travel related (so multi-timezones). However, this watch is an annual calendar - not something that makes you think sky nor travel right away. But, it is one of the few annual calendars that can go backwards without issue (good for traveling West, but before crossing the international date line) and there is a 24 hour timezone indicator which can be used for keeping track of a second timezone. So... The SKY name does make total sense once you look a little deeper! It is indeed a great watch for someone who travels by air a lot!
3. Land Dweller. This implies that the watch is for land dwellers and is not optimized for high elevation nor for the sea? I mean... What's a Land Dweller? It suggests that the watch prefers to stay on land. Not in the air. Not in the sea. A desert tortoise is a land dweller; they don't climb trees nor swim. A sloth is actually not fully a land dweller as they actually swim quite well and they live high up in trees. A cheetah is a land dwelling animal, although it can climb trees! Not sure what the logic is for the name... Can't wait to figure it out!
4. BONUS: Coast Dweller... There's no watch named Coast Dweller yet. But the trademark has been registered with many government trademark agencies around the world. Perhaps Rolex has got a watch for beach goers? With a beach chronograph that reminds you when you need to re-apply sunscreen? This is obviously a horological joke. I can't wait to see the next Coast Dweller - if Rolex ever uses the trademark. Sometimes they make the trademark just to throw people off!
What do you think about the name "Land Dweller" and what do you think is the etymology of the name? Looking forward to your comments!
Here's a joke: Maybe I shouldn't dwell on the name!
