Land Dweller, Sky Dweller, Sea Dweller. What's in a name?

Has anyone noticed that the names on one or two of the Rolex models sometimes don't have a clear meaning?  Not to be critical, but Land Dweller as a name sound great on the superficial level.  But once you peel away that superficial layer, and look deeper, the decision to name a watch "Land Dweller" is not very obvious to me.

1.  Sea Dweller, this name suggests that this watch is very happy to spend time in the sea and is both logical and meaningful, as the watch is definitely a dive watch!  Good choice of a name!  I think we all agree this one is very logical.

2.  Sky Dweller.  Sky Dweller implies that this watch is used in the sky.  If I told the watch's name was "sky dweller" you would assume there was something sky or air related.  Possibly travel related (so multi-timezones).  However, this watch is an annual calendar - not something that makes you think sky nor travel right away.  But, it is one of the few annual calendars that can go backwards without issue (good for traveling West, but before crossing the international date line) and there is a 24 hour timezone indicator which can be used for keeping track of a second timezone.  So...  The SKY name does make total sense once you look a little deeper!  It is indeed a great watch for someone who travels by air a lot!

3.  Land Dweller.  This implies that the watch is for land dwellers and is not optimized for high elevation nor for the sea?  I mean...  What's a Land Dweller?  It suggests that the watch prefers to stay on land.  Not in the air.  Not in the sea.  A desert tortoise is a land dweller; they don't climb trees nor swim.  A sloth is actually not fully a land dweller as they actually swim quite well and they live high up in trees.  A cheetah is a land dwelling animal, although it can climb trees!  Not sure what the logic is for the name...  Can't wait to figure it out!

4. BONUS: Coast Dweller...  There's no watch named Coast Dweller yet.  But the trademark has been registered with many government trademark agencies around the world.  Perhaps Rolex has got a watch for beach goers?  With a beach chronograph that reminds you when you need to re-apply sunscreen?  This is obviously a horological joke.  I can't wait to see the next Coast Dweller - if Rolex ever uses the trademark.  Sometimes they make the trademark just to throw people off!

What do you think about the name "Land Dweller" and what do you think is the etymology of the name?  Looking forward to your comments!

Here's a joke: Maybe I shouldn't dwell on the name!

And I want to get a more Oyster shaped bracelet. I'm not always the biggest fan of the Jubilee bracelet. Otherwise, I do like the shape of the case itself!

I love the Jubilee as it is soooo supple...

It's definitely more comfortable than the Oyster! But for looks, the Jubilee looks more delicate, and I prefer the bolder look of the Oyster bracelet. The President bracelet is another favorite from Rolex - for me.

I am glad you raised the question, and I like your analysis, but I am totally baffled by the Rolex branding team on this one.

I'm admittedly a little baffled too. I don't see the etymology of the name in the Press Release neither. Although I will admit, I skimmed straight to the technical details - which are impressive. This is likely the most advanced watch in the world. Definitely the most advanced watch that is ...

I’m sure you all know this, there is a post on Hodinkee that describes the movement in great detail, so name aside, sounds like a very technologically advanced watch that is being mass produced as Patrick said, regardless of name. The case and bracelet will be endlessly debated (I l...

That's a great article by Hodinkee! I have a habit of over writing articles... Some of my articles are 2000 to 3000 words. I'm supposed to keep it around 1000. So, I've been trying to be more concise! I do have another article focused on the movement, where I declare it is the most Advanced...

Rolex likely are referencing the “Land Sea Air” phrase… that has been used historically. Land is for the Daytona, Sea for the Subs and Air for the GMT. Likely would have been better off leaving it at that 😂 Sea Dweller I get because things “dwell “ at the bottom of the sea. Once Sky Dweller was brought in thou...

Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar ref. 5327

Introduced in 2016 , Patek Philippe's Perpetual Calendar ref. 5327 has a 39 x 9,71 mm case and is powered by micro rotor caliber 240 Q. Leaf hands , Breguet numerals , scalloped lugs ... many elements should make it popular and sought after, but it doesn't seem to get all the love it could (should?) get.
