Amanico's 2019 SIHH report introduces two Panerai Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech references, the PAM 961 and PAM 979, sparking a lively debate among collectors. His post questions the rationale behind releasing two such similar models with a significant price disparity, especially given the PAM 961's limited production and 'experience' offering. This discussion delves into Panerai's marketing strategies and the perceived value of these new Submersible iterations.

While till then Panerai Marina Militare were the apanage of the Luminor line, at the exception of the Radiomir PAM 339, we have, this year a revolution with the introduction of 2 " Marina Militare  Submersible ", the PAM 961 and the PAM 979.

The PAM 961:

The PAM 979:

Truth to be told, I don't understand some things, here.

First of all, why two very close Submersible badged Marina Militare? Indeed, both come with the same case, bezel, case back ( Carbotech for the case and bezel / Blackened Titanium for the case back ) and dial ( Carbon ).

PAM 961:

PAM 979:

Same movement, too, with the Cal 9010, automatic, 3 days power reserve, with the possibility to adjust the hours independently from the minutes.

Then, why a difference of 20, 000 euros between these 2 ( 39, 900 Euros for the PAM 961, 19, 900 Euros for the PAM 979 )... The fact that the PAM 961 is limited to 33 pieces and that you will be offered a training day with the Italian Marine Commandos doesn't justify such a difference in price, in my opinion.

It seems it is the year of the Submersible, for Panerai, with other watches unveiled from the same line, especially the Luna Rossa...

I would have loved to see some stuff for the old school guys among us, to tell you all.

And why not, a Marina Militare in the Submersible line, and another Marina Militare in the Luminor line.

But two Marina Militare Submersible? I really don't get it.

And even the price of the PAM 979 is very high... When you think that a PAM 587 Marina Militare is half the price, but not half the desirability of the 979...

Looking forward to reading your comments and thoughts,

Best.

You raised some very valid questions

First things first. The use of ‘Marina Militare’ on the dial has always been used sparingly and amongst Paneristi collectors, is considered somewhat special and a rarity. So I ask the rhetorical question, why cheapen the lineage of Panerai, Marina Militare watches with the regular PAM 00979? Second, differences between the PAM 00961 and PAM 00979 are minimal and insignificant — different colored dial indices and case back engravings. Again I ask the rhetorical question, what is so special about

Cheapening... That was the word I was looking for. The PAM 979 is too much, for me. One is ok, and why not the PAM 961 only. I have to agree 100% with your thoughts, my friend. [nt]

Also one more thing

For the 961, what is the reason only 33 pieces are made? I don’t understand. For something to be this limited, there must be a special meaning behind it. For me I don’t know if there is one. If there is no special meaning why can’t it be at least 50 to 100 pieces? Shouldn’t more people get to enjoy this watch? For me a special edition is good if it ranges between 100-500 pieces, so enough people can enjoy but limited enough in the world to preserve its rarity

A bit of history...

Throughout their history the MM has issued medals of Military Valour to 33 of their men, thus the edition of 33.
