Amanico shares his pursuit of the Patek Philippe Reference 3417 Amagnetic, a vintage piece he considers among the top three amagnetic watches ever made. His detailed photographs and personal reflections offer a rare glimpse into the nuances that make this particular reference a priority for serious collectors. This article delves into the specific features and collector considerations that elevate the 3417 to such a coveted status.

Sometimes, you need a gentle reminder to make you feel how great is a watch, and how high it can be in your wish list.

The 3417 Amagnetic is one of them.

Why? Simple! I consider it as one of the three greatest amagnetic watches ever made. For me, a top amagnetic watch must have a manual winding movement. Which is the case of the two other legends, the Omega Railmaster and the Jaeger Lecoultre Geophysic, which I am very happy to own.

So, in my list, I only miss this Patek 3417.

And some weeks ago, I could take new pictures of one I know, which is in one of my friend's collection.

Here it is.

The only thing which bugs me is that I never saw this crown on a 3417, which is, moreover, unsigned...

For the rest, it is a pure beauty.

A macho case and lugs. A timeless dial...

Its amagnetic dustcover, and screw-in case back.

And the wonderful Cal 27 AM 400.

Yes, the kind of watch which would make me considering letting several go to fund it!

Best,

Nicolas

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3417

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3417 is notable for its antimagnetic properties, a feature less common in dress watches of its era. It represents a specific technical advancement within the Calatrava line, designed to protect the movement from magnetic fields, which could impair timekeeping accuracy. This focus on functional resilience distinguishes it from other Calatrava models primarily known for their aesthetic simplicity. The reference was produced in limited quantities, contributing to its specialized appeal.

This reference typically features a 33 mm case, often in stainless steel, though examples in yellow gold are also known. It houses the manual-winding caliber 23-300 PM, a movement specifically engineered with antimagnetic components. The PM designation indicates "Protection Magnétique." The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers a water resistance of 25 meters. The power reserve for this caliber is approximately 44 hours.

The 3417 appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's technical innovations and the brand's response to specific horological challenges. Its antimagnetic construction places it in a distinct category, offering a blend of classic Calatrava design with a practical, albeit subtle, complication. Variants exist with different dial configurations, including those with radium luminous material, further diversifying its collector interest.

But hope one day to find an opportunity... ! If crown bothers you perhaps it is not the right specimens...

... so you are clearly right to at least be cautious about that crown. Except for that, I agree this piece is just spectacular, including the dial and the movement! Good luck in seizing a 3417 that you are perfectly happy with one day! Cheers.

In my opinion, it's worth some sacrifices, but only for an example that feels completely right to you. Best of Luck!! Domenick
