rnaden shares his recent acquisition, a Patek Philippe Ref. 3802J, as a refreshing alternative to the highly sought-after steel sports watches dominating the market. He highlights the watch's enduring elegance, impressive thinness for an automatic with a date, and the value found in less-hyped references, reflecting a maturing perspective in his collecting journey.

Given that pretty much every forum and blog over the last month has been writing articles about the craziness of the steel sports watch market, mainly over Patek and Rolex, I think we can still find many, many more interesting alternatives instead of following the herd. This 3802J is one example.

This one is about 20 years old, based on the papers, and still in near perfect shape, and even 34mm doesn’t seem too small. What I am most amazed by is that Patek managed to fit an automatic rotor and a date into 8.4mm of thickness, which is a testament of their prowess and skill.

Maturing in this hobby - after many years, I find myself going back to the simple watches. No more chronographs and unnecessary functions which I don’t use. Ok, once in a while if I see something mad, like the Seiko Gundam, I do pick them up just because smile

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3802

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3802 represents a distinctive variation within the Calatrava collection, characterized by its officer's case back configuration featuring a hinged dust cover. This reference was produced during the 1990s through 2000s period and offered collectors a choice between 18k yellow gold or 18k white gold case materials.

The 33mm case houses the automatic caliber 240 movement, providing 48 hours of power reserve. The watch features a smooth bezel and sapphire crystal, with water resistance to 25 meters. The timepiece is completed with a leather strap, maintaining the dress watch aesthetic typical of the Calatrava line.

The reference 3802 appeals to collectors who appreciate the traditional officer's case design with its protective hinged dust cover, a feature that distinguishes it from standard Calatrava references. The availability in both precious metal options and the compact 33mm case size positions this reference for those seeking a formal timepiece with classical proportions and traditional case architecture.

now that I am retired and moving back to SG for good next year. I would dearly love to find a reputable dealer there and maybe I will be very lucky to find myself a Calatrava too

the rotor still sounds like music when you spin the watch around.
