TheMadDruid shares the detailed acquisition story of his Patek Philippe Ref. 5230G, a World Time model that represents a significant entry into his Patek Philippe collection. This post delves into the decision-making process, highlighting the influence of fellow collectors and personal preferences that led to this specific reference.

This watch was actually first posted, anonymously, by Raymond_S in a picture taken during the PuristS event at the Patek Philippe Exhibition in NYC this past July. And I snuck it into a few posts some time ago. But now, here it is in what I hope are some nice photos of this beauty.

I knew that when it came time to get a World Timer, Patek had to be of preeminent consideration. The 5130 was not an option. I believe it to be a beautiful watch but I do not like the hour hand, and I couldn't get past that. Thus the 5110, despite my belief that it was a bit small, seemed to be the way I would go. In fact, I came quite close to getting one while in Paris back in June. That I didn't was due to a string of emails with a British Vlad who prefers to be called a Navigator-and this is a story for another time.

That I ended up with the 5230 is due, in part, to a Purist from Reading; a Purist from Paris; and the said Vlavigator.

My Reading mate and I were walking down Bond Street when he noticed the 5230 in a shop window, and remarked on how much he liked this new reference. We both agreed it was an improvement on the 5130. This was my first time seeing the watch in the real world.

My (new) friend in Paris and I had a rather lengthy discussion about Patek WTs and he was quite enthusiastic about the 5230, and now a worm was burrowing into my head. I did think that if I was to get into owning a PP it would have to be either a WT or an Annual Calendar, as I thought these were both iconic Patek pieces. That I finally went WT (at least for the first purchase!) was with the help of the Vlavigator, who also felt the 5230 was a great iteration of WT watches from PP, and put me in touch with his Dealer.

(Mandatory gin shot-note Gordon's new label!)

Back in London I went to a shop that sold Patek Philippe and which had both WG and RG models for viewing-frankly this was a tough choice, the Rose being quite attractive and on a gorgeous brown strap.

In the end I ended up with the "G"; and absolutely no regrets.

One thing I have to add-it seems Patek ,in the "beta" version of the 5230, had changed some of the city names on the dial. If memory serves me Noumea was out. That would never do!!! I absolutely need to know the time in Noumea daily. Not sure why, but I do. I was very happy to see Noumea on the dial of the 5230 when I first held it in my hands.

I want to thank my mates who had a hand in steering me to this watch. I am very, very pleased with it. It is truly a keeper, and at least some of you will see it for real on my next trip abroad.
Thanks for staying with me here. Cheers!

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5130

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5130, introduced in 2006, is a World Time watch that succeeded the popular reference 5110. This model maintained the distinctive World Time complication, allowing for simultaneous display of time in 24 different time zones. Its design evolved with a slightly larger case and updated dial aesthetics, distinguishing it from its predecessor while retaining the core functionality that defines Patek Philippe's travel timepieces. It was produced until 2017.

The watch features an 18k rose gold case measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 9.8mm in thickness, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU movement. This ultra-thin movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The dial is silver or opaline with a guilloché center, protected by a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.

Reference 5130 appeals to collectors seeking a sophisticated travel complication from Patek Philippe. Its larger case size compared to the 5110 offered a more contemporary presence on the wrist, while its classic World Time mechanism remained a hallmark of the brand's technical prowess. The model was available in various precious metals, with the rose gold variant offering a warm aesthetic.

...........a superb choice. I think you went the right direction with the WG, though there is no "mistakes" with either. I cannot wait to see it on your wrist. Massive congratulations, Mike.....you deserve it.

And what a great piece this is! I find their world timers amongst the most attractive offerings they have and this is an excellent example you got. And some great pics, too!

I tried on 5230G and R at my AD some time ago and found that both are really beautiful. I share your view that 5230 is an improvement on 5130, although I would have preferred a case diameter of 39.5 mm. I'm seriously considering to buy one in the future. Really nice catch. Best, Volker

I think getting the white gold 5230 is a very solid move. I also do like this Reference and it is a great visual delight with that anthracite Guilloche. Great photos as well! Did you say in the text that this was your entry to World Timers? Ahem, what about your little GP A side-by-side shot of those two would be fantastic! Cheers, CC

I really like the 5230, in particular I love the case and lugs compared to the 5110 and 5130.
