In this insightful post, jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) shares his journey with the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 4947/1A, a timepiece that challenges conventional gender classifications in luxury watchmaking. His personal experience highlights the importance of wrist presence over catalog designations, offering a fresh perspective on collecting steel Patek Philippe complications. This article delves into why the 38mm Annual Calendar, with its distinctive blue Shantung dial, has become a versatile and cherished addition to his collection, even finding favor with his wife.

Hi everyone !

Sharing this 4947 Annual Calendar, which I got back in Dec 2023. Been so long since I posted here and I’m glad to be back here.

When I was asked if I were interested to buy this watch, I was hesitant initially due to the reference number suggesting it’s a ladies model in the PP catalog. But I love the blue Shantung textured dial and the thought of having another all steel PP bracelet watch interested me so I went to the boutique to have a look. After I tried it on my wrist, I felt the 38mm sized case is a perfect watch for both gentlemen and ladies and I decided to buy it!

Some shots to share since I got the watch. Last shot is a couple shot with my wife wearing this 4947/1A with me wearing my 5712/1A…. Yes my wife has laid claim to this watch from time to time lol! She likes it too.

Have a great weekend all!

Cheers
Robin

About the Patek Philippe 5712 Ref. 5712

The Patek Philippe Complications Reference 5712 is a notable offering within the brand's Complications collection, distinguished by its asymmetrical dial layout and a suite of practical indications. It presents a sophisticated blend of functionality and design, offering a moon phase, power reserve indicator, and an analog date display, all arranged to create a distinctive visual identity that sets it apart from more traditional Patek Philippe designs.

This particular reference features a stainless steel case measuring 40 mm in diameter, housing the self-winding caliber 240 PS IRM C LU. This movement is known for its slim profile, achieved through the integration of a micro-rotor, contributing to the watch's comfortable wearability. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers a water resistance of 60 meters, with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

For collectors, the 5712 represents an accessible entry into Patek Philippe's complicated timepieces, offering a range of functions without the complexity of a perpetual calendar or chronograph. Its stainless steel construction and integrated bracelet provide a robust and versatile option, appealing to those seeking a daily wearable complicated watch. The reference has been in production since 2006, with the 5712/1A denoting the stainless steel bracelet variant.
