Amanico shares his personal reflections and detailed photographs of the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3445, a vintage piece that challenges his usual preferences for watch characteristics. Despite his reservations about colored gold, automatic movements, and date complications, the elegance of the 3445 has captivated him. This post offers a close look at the subtle design elements that make this reference a compelling choice for collectors.

I am not a colored gold fan, nor an automatic movement lover, and even less a date admirer, but sometimes, there are watches which are so elegant that they can break the rules.

Not at the point I bought it, but this watch has some very interesting points.

First of all, the case: The dimensions are much different in the real than on the paper: 35 mm big, 10, 4 mm high.

But when you put it on the wrist, I thought I as closer to a 36 / 37 mm case.

Look at these angular lugs, too.

The way the crown is integrated suggests that Patek wanted to partially protect it. And you will happily find the Calatrava Cross at its top.

Then, the dial... Long and thin applied gold hour markers and hands, four very discrete round dots between each hour markers, even the date doesn't seem to be too intrusive in such a dressy decorum.

The small seconds show an intriguing detail: The 15 seconds indices, which look like an unfinished crosshairs sub dial.

The sunburst dial is thoroughly made.

The screw in case back hides an automatic movement, the Cal 27-460. I didn't have the time to open the case back to take some pictures.

This watch dates from circa 1967 for those who wondered from what era it belongs.

A nice demonstration that all rules have a limit, when something is well made. Even if I will always prefer a Patek 570 in steel, to this one. But we can appreciate Beauty everywhere, cannot we?

Best,

Nicolas

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 570

The Patek Philippe reference 570 is a classic Calatrava-style dress watch, representing a significant period in the brand's production of time-only pieces. It is distinguished by its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, embodying the traditional design principles that Patek Philippe is known for in its non-complicated watches. The reference 570 was offered in various metals and dial configurations, making each example unique within the broader series of Patek Philippe's round cased watches from the mid-20th century.

This particular example features an 18k white gold case with a diameter of 38mm. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by a manual wind movement, reflecting the common practice for high-end dress watches of its era. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters, typical for a watch of this type and period.

The reference 570 appeals to collectors seeking a pure expression of Patek Philippe's watchmaking heritage, particularly those interested in the brand's foundational dress watch designs. Its various iterations, including different case materials and dial finishes, offer a range of options for discerning collectors. The enduring appeal of the 570 lies in its understated elegance and its representation of a specific era of Patek Philippe's design philosophy.
