It is the PP Gondolo 5009j from 2002 complete with papers. No original box, but a new leather PP travel case was provided. I purchased it from the European Watch Company (superb service by Tony). I looked at and tried on many watches — Moser, VC (including a 1921), other PP’s (loved the Aquanaut, 38mm) and an ALS Saxonia (tempting). It was a lot of fun. Ultimately, this PP, my first, captured my heart once I had it on the wrist.  I had been eyeing it on-line for weeks.

About the IWC Big Pilot Ref. 5009

The Patek Philippe Reference 5009 is a distinguished rectangular timepiece, part of a series of watches that showcase Patek Philippe's expertise in shaped cases and manual-winding movements. It stands out for its classic proportions and understated design, appealing to collectors who appreciate traditional watchmaking and a more formal aesthetic. This reference, along with its close siblings, represents a particular era of Patek Philippe's production of elegant, non-round timepieces.

This particular reference features a 26 x 39mm case, typically crafted in yellow gold, housing the manual-winding Caliber 215. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a dial often characterized by painted Arabic numerals. While specific water resistance for this reference is not widely publicized, its design suggests a focus on dress wear rather than robust utility. The manual-winding movement provides a reliable and traditional horological experience.

The 5009 appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's history of shaped watches, particularly those powered by the Caliber 215. Its availability in yellow gold distinguishes it within its immediate family of references, offering a specific material choice for enthusiasts. The watch represents a segment of Patek Philippe's catalog that emphasizes classic design and mechanical purity, making it a noteworthy piece for those seeking a refined and historically significant Patek Philippe.
