Robert65 initiates a thought-provoking discussion on the romantic, yet often complex, reality of passing down luxury timepieces like Patek Philippe. His post delves into the challenges and successes collectors face when considering heirs who may not share the same passion for horology or financial discipline. This thread explores the emotional and practical considerations beyond the idealized vision of intergenerational watch transfers.

Not every Patek owner has a successful, responsible son who loves high horology and is dreaming of the day that his Father will bequeath the family heirloom to him to cherish forever.  Never to leave the bloodline.  Through feast, famine, financial hardship.  The Patek would remain in the family as the true link from Father to Son and beyond.  That's a romantic notion and probably as likely as a world famous athlete having a son who also becomes a world famous athlete in the exact same sport.

But, how does it work when your son isn't financially responsible?  Or doesn't care about watches.  Or perhaps you have daughters.  Can any Patek enthusiasts share lessons learned in this extremely niche hobby of ours?  What happens when the highly responsible and financially disciplined father has taken great pains to keep a Patek for his son/daughter?  Does the process succeed?  Does it fail?  Please take a moment to share what you have observed in this wonderful community of ours.

Best,
Robert

Two beauties that will come into possession of highly liquid assets... (nervous)

I’m even concerned about them getting big time low-balled by a dealer when they go to sell them😬

Wish I could etch some kind of message on the back "Always keep in our blood line!" LOL! With fashion/luxury conscious daughters (worldwide) for example... when it comes to beautiful jewelry for the wrist - many females will imagine a lovely bracelet stack LONG before wearing an old watch!

I have only 1 Patek but 3 daughters. My great grand father celebrated his golden wedding anniversary by offering 2 identical PP2573 to his two sons in the seventies. I inherited both but only kept my grand uncle with whom I had a better personal relationship (even if his watch was more worn, he had a passion for horology as he had been himself a PP dealer). I wear it regularly even if it really is a grandfather watch with its golden dial. Lovely family heirloom which I will only sell as last rec

The highly responsible and financially disciplined father who has taken great pains to keep a Patek should have invested that money wisely. 🧐

Although for me, totally out of the question as I have neither a Patek nor kids…lol But I think there is a romantic idea of passing down something that we ourselves love, be it money, possessions or that failure of a sports team we’ve stuck by far too long. I think if I was a parent it would be great to pass a watch down to a child, boy or girl……but that being said I’d be far more concerned to pass down the idea of being a great human being more than any possessions. And if I had a collection of

Your lovely daughters surely anticipate that moment! Beautiful story about your great grand father.
