SJX presents an exclusive look at three Patek Philippe minute repeaters—the Ref. 3979J, 5078P, and 5016R—through a series of video clips featuring collector-owned pieces. This post offers a rare opportunity to hear the distinct chiming of these haute horlogerie masterpieces, providing a comparative, albeit general, auditory experience for enthusiasts.

Here are video clips of the references 3979J, 5078P and 5016R minute repeaters from Patek Philippe. These are not showroom watches, they are owned by collectors who have worn them. The 3979 is a couple of years old while the 5078 and 5016 are fairly new.

Although the videos were filmed at the same place at the same time, save for the third clip of the 5016, it would not be fair to compare the chiming, except very generally, because of differences in ambient noise (cars going by) or closeness to the camera/microphone.

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 3979

The Patek Philippe Reference 3979 is a minute repeater wristwatch, introduced as part of the brand's 150th anniversary celebrations in 1989. This reference is distinguished by its classical round case and the highly complex minute repeater complication, a hallmark of traditional horological artistry. It represents Patek Philippe's commitment to high complications and traditional watchmaking techniques, serving as a significant piece within their grand complication offerings.

The watch features a case typically crafted from precious metals, housing a sophisticated manual-winding mechanical movement. The movement is designed for precision and the intricate operation of the minute repeater, which chimes the hours, quarter hours, and minutes on demand. The crystal protecting the dial is generally sapphire, offering clarity and scratch resistance. The case dimensions are modest, adhering to traditional dress watch proportions.

For collectors, the Reference 3979 holds particular appeal due to its minute repeater complication and its association with a significant anniversary year for Patek Philippe. It is a piece that demonstrates the pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking and appeals to those who value horological complexity and historical significance within the brand's lineage. Its limited production further enhances its desirability among serious collectors of high complications.

my favorite. If I could ever afford such a piece ... I would make an exception to the rule that it is too small FOR ME
