Russell996's acquisition of a Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts timepiece offers a rare glimpse into the pinnacle of horological artistry. His detailed account, enriched by personal research into the watch's historical inspiration, provides invaluable context for collectors interested in Patek Philippe's most exquisite métiers d'art. This article explores the intricate details of his unique piece and the broader significance of these highly coveted creations.

After asking on several occasions over the years I was immensely lucky this year to be rewarded with a stunning piece from the rare handcrafts collection. AD presented the piece to me on Thursday in Geneva during an amazing factory visit with a group of their most passionate Patek collectors. I can thoroughly recommend the factory visit if you ever get the chance.

The piece is amazing, 3 types of enamel work (cloisonné, paillonne and miniature painting) with an engraved hunter case back housing a 240 micro rotor movement. What really impresses is of course the dial, not just in detail and the level of workmanship but also in size.

The piece also features on the front cover of the Rare handcrafts brochure where Patek have gold foiled the cloisonné gold wires - the brochure looks spectacular.

The image is based on the 1948 poster that was produced to promote the 1948 Grand Prix des Nations that took place in Geneva (held in 1946, ‘48 and ‘50 - poster attached). Patek have then flipped the poster around, included the Lake Geneva fountain and also the Patek manufacture building of the day (now the salon) which is virtually centre of the picture - kind of neat. Having researched the race the image is as if looking back to Geneva from the hairpin between the main straights- it was of course a road circuit but all the roads can still be seen on Google maps. Circuit in red on the attached map and the salon is the red dot at the bottom with the fountain to the lower middle right.

Car 2, a Ferrari (166/f2 according to Motorsport magazine) finished 3rd and the car behind is a Maserati that went on to finish 1st or 2nd (Maserati had a one two on the day).

About the Patek Philippe Complications Ref. 175thcollection

The Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary Collection, launched in 2014, comprises a series of highly complex and limited-edition timepieces created to commemorate the manufacture's significant milestone. This collection showcases Patek Philippe's mastery across various horological disciplines, featuring a diverse array of complications and artistic crafts. Each model within the collection represents a distinct facet of the brand's heritage and technical prowess, designed for discerning collectors.

The collection includes models with a variety of precious metal cases, such as rose gold, white gold, and platinum, with dimensions and thicknesses varying significantly depending on the specific reference. Movements are exclusively mechanical, encompassing both manual-winding and automatic calibers, many of which are newly developed or highly modified for these special editions. Sapphire crystals are universally employed, and water resistance ratings vary by model, reflecting their specific design and intended function.

This anniversary collection appeals to collectors seeking exceptional examples of contemporary haute horlogerie and significant pieces within Patek Philippe's modern history. The limited production numbers and the complexity of the movements ensure their continued relevance in the secondary market. The collection includes a wide spectrum of complications, from world timers and chronographs to grand complications, offering a varied selection for different collecting interests.

I applied for this one as well but the country GM called me as they will get only one piece of this dial for my country and it couldn't be me as it was my first application for these RH models. Super happy for you that it worked out!!
