In this insightful article, quattro meticulously showcases the Patek Philippe Ref. 3404, a vintage square timepiece from the 1960s that often goes unnoticed. His detailed examination, complete with numerous examples across different precious metals, highlights the reference's unique design elements and enduring appeal, making a compelling case for its significance in Patek Philippe's history. This piece serves as an invaluable resource for collectors seeking to understand the nuances of this rarely seen model.

The Patek Philippe ref. 3404 is a wonderful square watch from the 1960s.

Measuring 27.5 x 33 mm (incl. lugs), the white gold case feels just right on the wrist: not too big, not too small.

Though very simple, the dial features unusual carved, slash-like indexes for the hours, which give it a striking appearance, to which the brushed surfaces of the case also contribute.

The 22 mm lug-width is also unusual for such a "small" case, but, together with the square shape, it contributes to give the watch a great presence on the wrist.

The watch has a nice profile.

And it is thin (probably around 7 or 8 mm with the crystal).

The snap-on caseback is very simple, with a notch allowing for an easy opening.

The watch is powered by the beautifully designed and finished manual-wind caliber 23-300

Like the recently released Cubitus, it is a square watch with a round movement.

The movement holder fixed to the case by four screws, one at each angle, is quite unusual too.

So now, let's have another look at the fit on the wrist.

The photos taken from a little distance clearly show how the watch looks on the wrist.

Now, because this reference is very rarely shown, I'd like to complete this post with several other examples in each of the four precious metals.

B/ PLATINUM EXAMPLES

1/ A questionable example

This example is displayed several times on the internet, but the hands look inauthentic to me and the dial and indexes have been heavily repainted.

An example to avoid absolutely, in my opinion.

I personally like this reference and would like to find a platinum example with correct hands, an untouched dial and a matching buckle: a very rare and unlikely bird, of course...

What about you: does this reference appeal to you?

Thanks for reading.

Best, Emmanuel

Some amazing examples here. And the slashed or notched dials are subtle and elegant. Lots of value out there in those vintage square PP...

I am very much into vintage time only Pateks with unusual case shapes, and this reference is certainly quite something special! The G version (first one you featured) is definitely my favourite (its perfect proportions looks fantastic on your wrist!), as is the G with the cream dial and the first P featured. Clean and sharp dial that matches the clean and sharp eccentric case! Good luck with the hunt!

This ref. made a great impression on me. I really like the design of the case and dial with the carved indexes. And, even if round, the movement is very much to my taste. The example I’ve tried on is very nice, but the buckle, though coming from the 60s isn’t PP signed and there’s no papers. Best, Emmanuel

I’m glad you like these vintage time only shaped PP watches. I agree that the example I’ve tried on is very attractive. I’m tempted. But it doesn’t have any papers and the buckle, though coming from the 60s isn’t signed PP. So not an ideal example. But a beautiful one, no doubt! Best, Emmanuel

interesting post !👍 Florentine finish is quite exceptional 💪 and is my favorite of the different variants. I would love to see this type of case in the metal. The one with diamond hour markers is also attractive. This square shape is another linage for the Cubitus IMO.
