Baron - Mr Red initiates a Rolex Explorer roll-call, celebrating new owners of the vintage Ref. 6610 and inviting all Explorer enthusiasts to share their watches. He highlights the enduring appeal of the 6610, particularly its 'Red Depth' variant, and encourages a broader appreciation for the entire Explorer lineage.
I have certainly dedicated more than one post on this watch in the past. Here is a link to the more detailed article I did on the watch some time ago.
Today, I just wanted to use the post to send a big hello to the new 6610 on the forum....HS111. Along with Nicolas and myself, H has now joined the small (but growing) club of 6610 owners. So, my first roll-call is to H and Nicolas to post their 6610s.
But I also want to see ALL Explorers in all their various guises...1016s, 16550s, 1655s, 6610s.... whatever and however they come....Explorer time.

About the Rolex Rolex ROLEX, EXPLORER II FRECCIONE , REF. 1655 Ref. 1655
The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655, often recognized by its distinctive orange 24-hour hand, was introduced as a tool watch for speleologists and polar explorers. It offered enhanced legibility in low-light conditions and a fixed 24-hour bezel to distinguish between AM and PM in environments where day and night cycles are obscured. This model stands apart from its GMT-Master sibling by focusing on a specific utility rather than multiple time zones, making it a specialized instrument within the Rolex professional line.
This reference features a 39 mm stainless steel case, housing the automatic Caliber 1575 movement. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. A robust acrylic crystal protects the black dial, which is characterized by its luminous hour markers and the prominent orange 24-hour hand. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters, suitable for its intended robust use.
Collectors value the 1655 for its unique aesthetic and its position as the original Explorer II. Its fixed bezel and distinctive hand set differentiate it from later Explorer II iterations and other Rolex sports models. The reference appeals to those who appreciate purpose-built watches and the early design language of Rolex's professional series, representing a specific chapter in the brand's history.

The Rolex Explorer reference 6610 represents an early iteration of the Explorer line, succeeding the reference 6350 and preceding the 1016. It is characterized by its robust construction and clear, legible dial, designed for reliability in various conditions. This reference maintained the foundational aesthetic of the Explorer, focusing on utility and durability without extraneous features, establishing the core identity of the model series. It was produced for a relatively short period, making it a distinct transitional piece within the Explorer's history.
This reference features a stainless steel Oyster case measuring 36 mm in diameter, providing a balanced presence on the wrist. It is equipped with the automatic Caliber 1530 movement, known for its reliability and precision, offering a power reserve of approximately 42-48 hours. The watch utilizes an acrylic crystal, typical for its era, contributing to its vintage appeal and offering good shatter resistance. Its relatively short production run means fewer examples are available compared to later references. Collectors often seek out examples with original dials and hands, which can exhibit various patinas over time, adding to their individual character and historical appeal within the broader context of Rolex tool watches.

About the Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16550
The Rolex Explorer II reference 16550 represents a transitional period for the model, bridging the gap between the vintage four-digit references and the modern five-digit iterations. It introduced significant updates while retaining some classic elements. This reference is notable for being the first Explorer II to feature a sapphire crystal and a quickset date function, enhancing its practicality and durability compared to its predecessors. It also marked the introduction of the caliber 3085 movement.
This reference features a 40 mm stainless steel case, characteristic of Rolex's robust sports watches. It is equipped with the automatic caliber 3085, which provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The watch maintains a water resistance of 100 meters and is protected by a sapphire crystal, a key upgrade from the acrylic crystals found on earlier Explorer II models. The fixed 24-hour graduated bezel is also made of stainless steel.
For collectors, the 16550 is particularly appealing due to its transitional nature and the presence of both white and black dial variants. The white dial versions are sometimes referred to as 'cream dials' due to a tendency for the lacquer to age into a creamy patina, making these examples highly sought after. This reference offers a blend of vintage aesthetics with modern technical advancements, making it a significant piece in the Explorer II lineage.
