I don't think it is patented. The big date feature on the Lange is indeed viewed by many as an attractive feature. It is also one of the signature features of Lange's primary German competitor, Glashutte Original. I am not technically conversant with the respective functions but I have seen commentary among some Purists and among some commentators that the G.O. date function is generally viewed as the more innovative of the two. But both are terrific in my eyes (I own both brands so I'm not being biased).
