Hi ,
i was in a similar situation with my A series and trust me it was worth sending it to the AP. Though i nearly paid the price of a new 15300st back then but it truly made it a new watch . The rationale which AP gave for high costs was that each and every vinatge part was re made by hand and even the pivots and screws and links had to be done the same way as the original all over again hence the cost. i left the watch with them for over 9 months and i think i did the right thing.
In your case i dont know how you see your piece but mine being 1st generation A series and keeping in mind the current market value it was worth it. Or else currently you are better off buying a 15400st lol .
