The cal. 2120 and cal. 3120 are two entiirely different movements

Hi, Eric,

Interesting handle!  smile

The caliber 2120/2121 was designed back in the 1960's; it was (and is) considered a landmark, legendary movement - reliable, "accurate" and the thinnest full rotor automatic ever made (and possibly might still be; thinner movements use embedded micro-rotors which allow the overall movement to be slightly thinner)

A design tour de force, it used a very tricky to properly service hanging barrel design (which is why this movement really should be serviced only by experienced watchmakers WITH THIS PARTICULAR MOVEMENT; you don't want a good but inexperienced watchmaker learning on your watch...) overall, just a great movement and one lusted after by movement aficionados and AP fans alike.

The cal. 3120 is an inhouse movement - designed and produced in house by AP (the cal. 2120 was a sponsored development by Jaeger-LeCoultre) that had as a design brief to be reliable and "tractorlike" while being finely finished.  As such, it is thicker and "beefier" in some areas.

Hence watches that use the cal. 3120 will necessarily be thicker than watches using the cal. 2120 (unless, for some reason, the company using the cal. 2120 decides to put it into a thick case.)

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask for more information if interested.

Cheers,

TM
