The only way Tesla survives and thrives financially long-term is if the self-driving infrastructure is successfully commercialized to the fullest extent, and a significant part of that is commercial trucking at all scales. I'm not at all inclined to ever own a Tesla vehicle, but I'm confident I'll end up using some of their future self-driving services....
I think that this was the real reason behind the push for self driving cars. To test the waters to get self driving trucking industry up and running.
No need to pay drivers, and the trucks can run 24 hours a day depending on the advancement in battery tech.
