Follow-up to my question # 1...

1. Christie's 1964-1965 Sir David Salomons sale: Edgar Mannheimer purchased all 20 lots from Part III of the sale (November 1965). Anecdotes suggest all 20 watches were purchased on the behalf of Thomas Engel (can this be verified?) My documentation finds for certain that Breguet Nos. 987, 3519, 3872 and 5047 of the Part III sale were owned by TE...the remaining watches from Part III are: Breguet Nos. 2556, 4760, 2758/417, 3012, 852, 3999, 4285, 3624, 4321, 119, 2183, 2687, 2934, 3625, 4047 and 2568 but I cannot locate any supporting documentation that these watches were owned by TE; if it can be verified that all the Part III watches were purchased by Edgar Mannheimer on the behalf of Thomas Engel then problem solved.

The follow-up...

In the English edition of Thomas Engel's autobiography TE says: "That evening I spent with Cyril [Rosedale] again. We divided the watches between us and so both of us were happy"—the word divided to an English speaker can mean split up the watches but in the German edition of the autobiography below we have...

Ich bezahlte Eddi seine Kommission. Er war stolz, so sehr ins Gesprach gekommen zu sein als bedeutendster Handler fur alte Uhren. Abends saB ichwieder mit Cyril zusammen. Wir teilten die Uhren untereinander auf, und so war jeder glucklich.

...which I think translates to "I sat in the evening together with Cyril again. We shared the clocks among ourselves, and so it was everyone happy."-to an English speaker, or should I say an American like me the word shared can suggest two friends sharing the watches and not necessarily splitting up the watches between themselves so I think the answer to my question # 1 is that Thomas Engel did own all 20 watches in the Christie's Part III sale and the word divided in the English edition of the book is just an unfortunate choice of word.

I have the German edition of the Thomas Engel autobiography so not knowing German I at first missed the below passage concerning the Christie's Part III sale but luckily I have some scanned pages from the English edition and until the last sentence it see...

I mean I'd be surprised if many people have been through a bibliography as extensive as that.
