Horological Meandering

5 years, 10k posts. as promised, 1964 revealed in all (well some) of its glory

as anyone who's read any of my posts will know, i have a little theme going on involving watches made/sold in the year of my birth. 1964.

surprisingly this is a year shared by more than a handful of Purists including 3 moderators that i know of. it brings me in mind of the survey done by, i think, AndrewD, about chinese birth signs and zodiac signs.
the result of that found that there were a high numbers of Dragons and Leo's. i'm both a Dragon and a Leo which just about says it all smile

i've been asked many times to reveal the whole 1964 theme together in one post so have decided to keep it until this milestone, 5 years of membership and my 10,000th post.
those 5 years have been a rollercoaster for me, but Purists has become my second home and i'm proud to call many members my friends. the number of posts indicates how much i like spending time here.

i started this little theme just over 4 years ago with the purchase of an Omega Speedmaster. i had sold a modern piece and thought it would be nice to have 1 iconic watch from my birth year.
little did i know where i would be 4 years later.
when i reveal all you will see that i have more Omega's than anything else and that is because they have always been my favourite vintage brand and one i have the most experience in.

i would like to stress that i have dated all these watches to the best of my ability using all the facilities i have found available, but nothing is definitive so i have allowed a margin of error. for example, when it comes to Omega's i am happy if the case ref has -64 after it, the movement serial number fits the year, the assay mark fits the year or the presentation on the back is dated 1964. some of the dating is purely down to the knowledge of the seller who can give me enough information to satisfy me.

while i'm talking about presentation watches, a lot of people won't touch a watch which has an inscription on the back and in some cases i won't. ie. 'to frank love winnie 5/6/64' wont be part of my collection unless it can be removed, but i am more than happy to purchase a company long service presentation as there is a history to the piece and the company which can be investigated.
one particular piece has an inscription to commemorate a hugely important event in the US race to the moon even though it looks like a a simple gift from one person to another.

i wear the vast majority of these watches which is exactly how it should be, but i will admit that there are a couple of pieces that are 30mm or less and get very little wear. they are in the collection more for the inscription on the back.

i have had immense fun with this theme over the last 4 years. the hunt for these pieces has had me trawling auction sites, thinking laterally as a lot of sellers dont know enough to date a watch and getting excited when i find something just a bit more desirable at a basement price.
i have to admit that some of my pieces are not in top A1 condition and that is because the cost difference between mine and the A1 piece is so dramatic that i have to make a considered decision.
i honestly can see no end to it. there will always be a model or brand i havent got or a movement calibre thats missing from a particular brand so the hunt continues, although i am now at a stage where the pieces i want are no longer 'fifty quid' so i will have to revise my purchasing tactics.

if you ever see anything that might interest me please feel free to pm me. i may not buy it, but i will always thank you for pointing it out to me.

anyway, here is the full reveal in alphabetical order. please enjoy them.
