Omega

Another look at the Omega Globemaster

The Vienna GTG and the visit to the Omega Boutique allowed all the participating Purists to sample a wide variety of Omega's current portfolio. A watch I am still very much interested in is the Globemaster, in its basic, stainless steel variety. As opposed to January, when I tried on the blue dial version in Switzerland, I had the chance to have a look at the white / grey version here.

And even if we are all of the opinion that blue is the colour of (watch) love, I have to say that I prefer the white / grey in this iteration. The case size is a real success IMHO, the shape is nice, the fluted bezel makes it a tad more formal (but may be an acquired taste for some), the pie pan dial is an excellent touch and the date, well, at least it is placed relatively well. And absent on the Pt version. Whether you swoon with joy at the news of the Master Chronometer certification carried out by METAS or not will probably depend on your personality - they make a good marketing story around it but whether the watches became more robust or precise as a result I cannot tell.

Overall I feel that Omega launched a watch with real potential here - a new line of sorts but one that should work very much to their advantage. IMHO it is their most versatile line yet, being at home in a business setting (much more so than any Speedmaster or current production Seamaster) but robust enough for the activities most of us engage in with a mechanical watch strapped to our wrists. If you want to swim, it may have to be the bracelet, otherwise the leather strap with the deployant will be absolutely fine (I find it preferable looks wise).
