Getting started in boating/yachting?

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to figure out how I can get into the fine sport of boating/yachting but haven't had much success. Sadly, my family has never particpated in the sport. I'm currently a Junior at Northeastern University (Boston, MA) but I'm away from school in Cleveland, OH on my 6-month work period. Originally from the Los Angeles area, I'll be back home for summer and throughout parts of Asia (in case that helps anyone's suggestions).

I honestly would love to find out more about the sport and I would appreciate any suggestions on where & how to get started without a huge investment (saving up for more fine timepieces of course!). I wouldn't mind if anyone here could give me free lessons in person

Apologies for the confusion if there is any: I would like to learn about sailing - thirsty for that knowledge and skill!

My advice is to get down to the local yacht club and talk to them about crewing. Either that or get yourself somthing like a Sabot, something you can get in the water by yourself. So you're not dependent on others in order to get out and practice.

When you get back to L.A., they have sailing classes and boats to rent (when you are ready to launch on your own) at Redondo Beach King Harbor. -MW
