Horological Meandering

greater diversity, or loss of focus?

Hi All

Over the last few months I seem to have hit a bit of a sweet spot on getting some more watches. Nothing that anyone could claim as haute horology - possibly not that distracting for others. Though interesting enough to peak my interest & need for a new toy. All have been vintage to a greater or lesser extent & all have been at the value end of things.

Or to put it more bluntly - cheap as chips.

They've all been posted here before individually, so nothing new other than perhaps putting them into context with one another. So in order that they arrived

Tradition brain matic - mainly for the movement - As5008. Had wanted a fully automatic alarm where rotor wound both movement and alarm. To me feels very much of its era - it will look better on a strap when I get around to changing it! Great piece fun & functional - my first brown dial, just need the matching flares. Two things I got from this was the range of brands that were around before the quartz crisis & that brainmatic used by more than one brand. Had originally been looking for a Fortis.

Lanco Fon - nice single crown alarm. Bought mainly as my first one expired and couldn't be repaired as watchmaker couldn't get the parts. Seem to recall "obscure" being written on the envelope! Had been looking for a while when this popped up - sometimes just need to pull trigger. Really like it, though for some strange reason not as enamoured of it as the first one - still good to have, especially as its fully functional smile

There's still an idea about getting the original fixed - but I'm aware they can be somewhat fragile.

Finally something id been hunting for for a while.

An Oris pendulette - pocket watch that morphs into a desk clock. Mind you it is tiny - never realised from any of the photos of them that I saw, always imagined it somewhat bigger.

Shows the need to see watches in your grubby little mits before making any decision. Still a great watch & my second & probably last pocket watch.

So what conclusions can I draw from my latest acquisitions? Not sure, but a few points might be that once you've had an idea however daft it tends to stick. That I'm still addicted to alarm watches. That bracelets still need to win me over. That perhaps sometimes its good to move on & try something different.

But probably also I'm still a bit of a magpie that likes shiny things & its even better if they can wake you up in the morning!

 Cheers
