Meeting up with a fellow Purist is always an occasion, especially when the initial contact was made via this forum. Cyberspace turns into reality; friendship and bonding is a natural progression when one shares similar interests. Watches have been a catalyst in bringing together like-minded individuals such as us.
The last time we met he was sporting the new Exp.II. I had already made up my mind beforehand that this watch was too big, too bold, brash and a little comical for my taste.
During lunch I couldn’t keep my eyes off it and it had indelibly locked into my psyche.
I could read the time clearly from where I was sitting. I was thinking maybe this is Rolex’s way of rewarding those that have through the years supported the brand and now as we age, made legibility a prime concern.
As we all know and from my past experience, resistance is futile, so after a few calls I managed to locate one and the rest is history. {We’re not talking about minute repeaters here, so once in a while I will allow myself a little spontaneous self-gratification.}
Today, we had another pleasant lunch together, discussing common interest such as cars, kids and of course watches. We both agreed that the exorbitant price that some brands are now demanding has left a somewhat bitter taste, even though some of these are in our collection.
The MR, the tourbillon etc. may be on hold for the time being as we savour the simple pleasures of munching on pizza and comparing the dials on our Exp.II.
Thanks for looking.
Fernando
