IWC Watchmaking Masterclass and Dinner
Hi all, a few weeks ago, I attended a watchmaking class put on by IWC and The Hourglass in Melbourne. The venue was at No.35 Restaurant ( on the 35 th. level of the Sofitel Hotel on Collins Street,Melbourne, Australia.
IWC did a terrific job setting up the displays of watches and watchmaking paraphernalia like watchmaking tools, movements and lighting in the private room given that the room was only made available after the lunch time service at the restaurant.
Edwin de Vries ( Brand Manager of IWC , Richemont Australia Pty.Ltd ) and Edwin Jesus ( Master watchmaker from Richemont Australia Pty.Ltd. ) flew in from Sydney to set up displays.Thank you guys. A lot of work and I am sure greatly appreciated by all the invitees ( Eight attended ). Jerry Ng and Evan represented The Hourglass.
In the private room, a long table with individual lighting , watchmaking tools , IWC pocket watch movements were all laid out meticulously for invitees.
In the middle of the room were the watch display cabinets and on the other side of the room a table set up for the dinner.
Drinks and canapes ( scrumptious oysters with lime dressing , little quadrants of belly pork with crispy skin and others ) started the evening whilst guest got to know each other and also to chin wag with the two Edwins from IWC and Jerry and Evan from The Hourglass.
After the drinks and canapes, we were all ushered to the watchmaking table and Edwin de Vries gave a powerpoint presentation about IWC history and its product range.
It is interesting to note that IWC do not make watches for woman BUT woman wear IWC watches. After the welcome and presentation by Edwin De Vries, Master watchmaker Edwin Jesus gave a power point presentation on the purpose of the master class. To dismantle an IWC pocket watch movement ( but not removing the spring from the barrel ) and to reassemble to a working movement again. He and Edwin walked around the participants to assist.
We all had varying success and cries of " oh s__t , I have lost another screw " was common. I managed to re-assemble my movement but alas it did not work. Edwin Jesus checked it for me and all the gears seems correctly positioned in their jeweled pivots. He suggested I re-torque the top bridge and when I did that, it starting working.Time flies when you are having fun and Edwin had to stop the session at 9.15 pm. so we can select our choices for dinner LOL.
Prior to this event, I admit to having knowledge and ownership of only certain models like the IWC 5001, IWC 3714, the big pilot's IWC 5004, the double chronograph ceramic top gun edition IWC 3799 and the limited edition Jacques Cousteau with a piece of wood from his ship , the Calyso.
I have a newfound appreciation of the Portofino line. The milanese bracelet is sublime and drapes over your wrist effortlessly. The specially made straps offered on the Portofino line made by the house of Santoni is so soft and exquisitely made. One of my favourite is the Aquatimer chronograph edition Galapagos Islands. The steel case has a complex vulcanised rubber coating and is warm to the touch. The chrono can be operated under water.
Dinner was fantastic and the watches were passed around to try on during dinner. Most of us stayed till 12.40 am.
A big thank you to IWC and The Hourglass for invite and the great effort to put on this watchmaking class and dinner for only 8 of us.
