Independents

Newbie - The What if Question...

Hello,

I have been collecting watches for the past 5 years but is still a newbie when come to independents. I have to admire them for their distinctive style, personality and in most case, superior hand finishing that compare well to or even surpass established brands. I recently purchased my first Independent watch, a Lang & Heyne Frederick 3 and love it. And I am now interested to get more.

However, the nagging question that has not been fully answered in my mind is, for an expensive independent brand of limited production, and I hope I don’t sound crass asking this, what if the brand goes out of business? Are these watches easily serviced? Or these are limited to simple 3 hand time only watches? For example, I have been told that FPJ watches can only be serviced by their own watchmakers. Now even if someone else can serviced in if the brand is no longer in businesss, what about the turnaround time? Parts availability and cost?

What if one gets a high complication watch from an independent brand? Or is this an inherent risk that collectors undertake when collecting independents?

Hope someone can give me some insights on this. I have been browsing the forums but seems no definite answer.
