Peter Speake-Marin GTG Hong Kong Nov 11th 2008 - iW magazine

Last Tuesday iW magazine and PuristSPro hosted a dinner for Peter Speake-Marin at the Conrad Hotel, Brasserie on the Eighth. For me it was the first time to meet Peter and see his wonderful collection. Peter is currently on a world tour previewing his new in house movement SM2. Among the many pieces shown here you can see a few special pieces including the Pearl Star, Vintage Tourb MK2, and Ancient Parquetry.

Here a glimpse of the components making up the new movement.

Peter sharing some stories about a recent trip to Tokyo.

Pre-dinner cocktails while admiring Peters Vintage Tourbillon MK2.

For those of you who haven't seen check out the new Chinese edition of iW magazine on the table.

Hmm.. someone about to show their very special watch from another independent.

Casual conversation among collectors.

Now the fun begins... time to play!

I was amazed that despite the thickness of the case it actually felt comfortable on the wrist.

There is definitely some heft to each piece but not overwhelming.

The enamel dial on the vintage tourbillon was quite elegant. The engraved back with serpentine power reserve indicators were also impressive.

The Piccadilly Serpent Calendar definitely catches the eye.

Peter giving some background each piece.

Some of the dials where quite extraordinary. Each watch is represents both superb craftsmanship and artistry.

Peter describes the very high standards that each piece must live up to.

The winding mechanism was very smooth.

After some time we all sat down for a presentation by Peter. He started off with some history and and overview of his work.

A brief introduction by Alfred Lung CEO of FLM Publishing Co Ltd.

We then put Alec on the spot for a follow up introduction and welcome to all collectors present.

Wait... does this guy know this is not a Journe dinner?

Peter engages the group by asking collectors for their own perspective on his work.

Peter continues with his presentation.

A toast to Peter's success!

The watch on the screen is Fighting Time which has two dragons chasing each other symbolizing eternity. The detailed engravings are extraordinary.

This was a special commissioned piece called the Imperial Piccadilly. If you don't know the story on this one have a look at the excellent interview written by SJX. ahci.watchprosite.com

Peter went on to show us the detailed and time consuming process used to produce this impressive lacquered dial "Urushi-e".

Guardians of Time - another example of the intricate engraving on the back.

And now what we were all waiting for... the speake Marin caliber SM2. (Don Corson recently posted a great article on this ahci.watchprosite.com )

One of my favorite Maki-e dials!

While most of us were fixated on Peter's collection and presentation this was supposed to be a DINNER! Alas the food has arrived.

The line up!

Australian sirloin medium rare.

Can you guess the Patek on the right?

Special thanks to Peter for a great evening and thanks to iW for hosting a great night!
