In three sentences or less- what are your criteria for collecting?
Just thought I'd ask all here what makes them buy one watch and not another. The other way of looking at this is, what is the theme of your collection. I love seeing collections that have a strong purpose (this has eluded myself thus far). This could be watches from a single brand, the perfect watch for each ocassion, movements etc. I once saw a post where a guy had nearly every lemania watch produced. While not an expensive collection (by comparison with others here) it really stuck me as the true definition of this hobby- a pure, single minded, driven goal to gather and appreciate watches?
I had a small colelction a number of years ago which I up and sold (somewhat to buy a car, engagement ring and a grail watch). I never gave up collecting but realised that I am far too impulsive- I pull the trigger on every pretty thing I see. So I have come to the conclusion that chasing a brand is what will drive my collection. Within that brand I have seen parallels to my personality and (perhaps goning to far) morals. The brands offers me a history of pieces to chase, drool over, and research. It also offers me new pieces every year to analysis and comment on (some good, some bad).
I guess that I have become an IWC man! At the moment I am chasing through the last 4-5 decades for my favourite old models (GST perpertual etc). This goal has allowed me to slow down and think- does it fit in my collection? That alone has opened a new dimension to what can be a very lonely hobby (to few collectors in Ireland).
So what are your collecting themes?
Amanico- dive watches and JLC?
Bernard- high art watches?
