Rolex Datejust??

Hi guys,

Hello to everyone! I hope everyone is well and to those in the UK like me, enjoying our Bank Holiday weekend! First time poster but long time lurker on the forums. Been collecting watches for about 3 to 4 years now. My humble STOC includes: GO Panomaticdate, Tag Heuer Grand Carrera, Alpina Avalanche Regulateur, JLC Reverso Grande GMT, Anonimo Wayfarer II (ox-pro) and various Russian watches from my travels. Planned incomings for the next 12 months include Montblanc Rieussec GMT Chrono, JLC Master Memovox..... and now Rolex Datejust??

I have suddenly developed an interest in the Rolex Datejust! I have never been a Rolex man (although my grandfather is- I believe he has an Air King as a beater and a DJ as a dressier watch), generally preferring more under the radar brands...... however, I walked past a Rolex AD the other day and saw a  SS DJ with white gold fluted bezel, blue dial, index markers with no date. It looked very nice in the display and as I was on my lunch break, I thought why not have a look? It was stunning- at 36mm, it was classic, sporty but elegant! I was going to snap it up there and then!

However, I held fire......  as a) I do find a date function very useful and the AD did not have the same model with date for me to compare and b) I had been planning on getting a Montblanc Rieussec (SIHH 2011 edition, black dial) within the next couple of months and getting a DJ now would set me back by at least 6 months..... Having our first baby in December so need to budget my spending more strictly! smile

Anyways, I would like to pick the brains of all the Rolex experts here. I have been doing a little research. It seems from the Rolex website the blue dial, index marker with date Datejust I is out of production.... (I prefer the smaller size of the DJ I to the bigger DJ II) Is this correct?

I also saw a salmon dial for sale from a dealer in the UK....Were they a special edition? (They also look very nice! Can’t decide between the blue or the salmon.)

At the same dealer, a few of the DJ’s with date has the date in red, rather than in black.... Is this also a model from before?

And lastly, what is the different between a jubilee strap and an oyster strap (apart from the obvious physical aesthetics!).

I still have to decide on which watch to get first but would really appreciate the knowledge and experience of the experts here on some Rolex history!

Many thanks,

Chi Kai
