The Governor Jules Audemars Dual Time and the JA line
Looking through my archives, I came across photos of this beautiful Jules Audemars Dual Time wristwatch.
This watch was made in a small run of pieces back in 2008 +/-. It was in association with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and featured a special caseback bearing the California Governor's official seal. While some of the other AP pieces made in association with Schwarzenegger are better known, this rare nugget is a very attractive edition.
The movement is the same as used in some of AP's other dual time pieces, the 2329/2846. Added to the hours and minutes are a date indicator, a power reserve, and the dual time display with day/night indicator.
The case on this one is 43mm in stainless steel. I always like watches that employ multiple case finishes, and this Jules Audemars has a polished bezel and brushed caseband. It is fitted on a dark blue alligator strap and the usual AP folding deployant buckle in stainless steel.
Of course, what is so amazing about this version of the Jules Audemars dual time is the incredible dial. A star shaped guilloche is quite apropos, given the relationship with Arnold's charity "After-School All-Stars". The dial has quite a bit of depth to it, and the subdials are machined into the metal. The dial is mostly blue and silver, with red hands used for the secondary displays. The blue Roman numerals are polished and sit on top of the silver area.
Here is a shot of the caseback with the Governor's Seal. Certainly unique.
I think this rare edition represents something that AP could really utilize well within the Jules Audemars line. When I look at this watch, I see an exciting dial with special features. Sporty and classy. And a very wearable size.
I think AP would do well to offer a similar timepiece in the regular Jules Audemars collection. Of course, there is another version already, but it is only offered in precious metals (white gold and pink gold) and has a more classical dial.
AP uses the Jules Audemars line mostly with precious metals and or to house complicated movements. But I really feel an opportunity to extend the line to other AP fans and customers is overlooked by not offering more interesting and affordable models. When I imagine this watch in a titanium case, with the same brushed caseband and polished bezel, and with a new black dial and maybe yellow numerals and accents, or white, or polished gold - well, I get excited about the prospect.
Perhaps AP is content to continue forward with the Jules Audemars line in mostly classy, precious, and complicated forms. But I sure would enjoying seeing a new excitement and freshening brought forth to the collection. In recent years we have seen the Millenary collection evolve and reach into this realm. Will the Jules Audemars line be next? I certainly hope so.
