Examples of the three major VFA movements - 6185, 6186, and 4580.
I say major, because in the instance of the 6185, there were 6185A and 6185B variants.
Watches are the 6185-8021-G (date), 6186-8000-G (day-date), and the legendary 4580-7010 (dateless) - which I have recently learned is almost certainly rarer than the Astronomical Observatory Chronometer. But I'll save that story for another time 
VFA stands for "Very Fine Adjusted". When these watches were sold in the early 1970's, they were regulated to +/- 2 seconds a day, and guaranteed to be accurate to within 1 minute a month for the first two years of ownership. Quite simply, the absolute pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking of their time.

Accuracy within 1 minute per month, guaranteed! Do you know of any modern manufacturers offering any better?
Or was this the pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking accuracy, period? It is also interesting that Grand Seiko was used as the main brand on the dial. Wonder why they abandoned this practice and began using simply 'Seiko' instead, relegating 'Grand Seiko' t...

That no date version is a killer...

I've heard that Rolexes were particularly accurate, but didn't know they go as far as to guarantee +/- 2 sec/day. Very impressive for Seiko to do this in 70s and for Rolex to do it for a million watches per year they produce
