Two Watch Collection – Part 6 (Last part) – From the Land of the Rising Sun

Japanese watches are no slouch. There i said it. They are able, to make very good quality watch to compete with the Swiss, if they want to, taste aside. This pair is unusual maybe. Here we have two good examples from different world : G Shock GW-5000-JF and Grand Seiko SBGW231.



Want a watch that can survive almost anything, without servicing, without even change the battery, has useful functions (stopwatch, timer, world time) , and very accurate? Nobody does it better than G-shock. This particular reference is the forefather of all square G-Shock. It is JDM model, with different spec than the cheaper international model. Stainless steel inner case (as opposed to resin), SS caseback with DLC coating, softer and higher quality rubber. At USD 300 when i bought it, it is a watch that i am comfortable wearing while doing anything that involve shocks, dirt, risk of banging around and dropped to the concrete. Sure it is not beautiful for anything than work, but that is why we have the other watch : Grand Seiko Elegance.







GS Elegance series SBGW231 is the smallest and simplest modern GS. 37 mm with mirror-like Zaratsu polishing, Box sapphirre crystal, creamy dial with three hands, no date, no unnecessary text. Just GS logo. Beating inside is modern handwound caliber 9S55 with 70 hours PR and special mechanism to prevent overwinding. 4,800 A/M magnetic resistance. Wear it with black, brown, tan, or blue alligator strap, it only elevates the beauty of this. It is a hidden gem. I was lucky to bought it at sighly below retail (USD 3800). Now it has been discontinued, and Seiko replace it with the same watch with different dial colour, and increase the price almost 30%, as if they realize the initial price was a mistake.





If you want the best from japanese watches as a 2 watch collection, one for work and sport without any worry, relatively cheap but not a garbage, and one beauty for dressy situation, G shock and GS are the perfect choice.
