I was walking around wearing a t shirt which resembles the Yellow Jersey of Tour de France. My wife calls me the Banana Man because of its yellow color. Yes, i was the Banana Man at the shopping mall today. I was also wearing my current favorite watch. This t shirt has an interesting tagline "There Is No Finish Line". It was Nike's tagline first developed in the early 90's. It was a test to the human spirits, pushing your own limits and boundaries. Will power. "Just Do It" kind of attitude. Nike is an American Icon.
When one talks about Tour de France, there is one man in the cycling world worth mentioning. He was stricken with cancer and went on to win the Tour de France 7 times. He was the real "Banana Man". Lance Armstrong. An Icon in the cycling world. A man with an iron will a hundred times stronger than a mere mortal.
I started thinking to myself when associations were made with the yellow jersey, the tagline, the cyclist, and my watch. Its all about competing with one's will, limits, pushing expectations. This watch of mine has been produced in the millions, affordable and yet not exorbitantly expensive to own one, simple, its current look is still very much classic looking although it has undergone changes, it has revolutionize itself, its predecessors now command premiums in the rare vintage market with wordings such as Red, Double Red, COMEX, with seriel numbers starting 6xxx which can be confusing. Priceless.
Millions of people wear this watch, from actors, legendary cyclist such as Lance Armstrong spotted with a Daytona or his GMT, from celebrities to politicians, revolutionaries, every man, heads of states, teenagers, a watch which may not require a service or repair with 30 years of wear, a watch which can take a beating, impact, shocks, a fall, or physically used in the harshest conditions.
Other brands may ponder on its popularity, a watch so common, and yet with continuous history of more than 50 years, a watch made famous by screen legends, its popularity can be astounding. No other watch can come close to it in terms of its strength, character, popularity and its status as the watch. It has stood the test of time when the watch world was introduced with other competiting brands and models with similar offerings or functions. No other brands evoke such emotions in the masses compared to this one. It goes about doing what it does best with little worry about its other competitors. It is an Icon on its own merits. This watch may not have a finish line. Its pursuit may never be ending.
There Is No Finish Line. The Banana Man and the watch. The Submariner.
