I don’t see the “abuse” nor “culprits” of quartz.
It was simply new technology that many Swiss brands themselves tried to embrace (and failed) via the Beta 21 consortium.
It was only GP with their 32,768 Hz breakthrough that managed to surpass the Japanese technology.
Quartz shook up the Swiss watch industry and forced consolidation. It also forced brands to turn to artisanal skills to differentiate between accurate time telling vs kinetic art.
I for one embrace BOTH mechanical as well as quartz. Just like I do not begrudge the calculator for displacing the abacus.
One can well see many Swiss brands doing the same …



Interestingly, I see another crisis for the Swiss watch industry today. One of insane cost of production. But more of that for another day.
