Did you try it on?
Although it is certainly not small at its 42mm the Chronomter wears extremely well even on smaller wrists.
I am chicken wrist handicapped myself but due to the very short lugs and the integrated curved strap it dies not need more space on your wrist than those 42mm.
If you did not do so up to now then do not hesitate to try it. (Myself I get the chance to wear the Chronometer for half an hour shortly after it was launched in 2009 so I knew that I could wear it.)
I share your view that It should not be smaller than it is because. In the end it is meant to be a deck watch.
