If the pushers don't need to be screwed down (thankfully) why does the crown need to be screwed down? Is it just extra protection or something that gives people a sense of confidence? Or is there something specific about a crown that makes it a requirement?

I don’t know this 100%,
but I believe the gaskets or water protection for the pushers are inside the case, but if you unscrew the crown you are pulling that gasket out which would allow water to enter the case.

About the index's
Well, it obscures the indexes but the luminous marker outside the index will be visible on each side of the arrowhead. Admittedly not so clearly, but it still there.
