Dear Simon,
Thanks for taking the time to show us your watches. It is very moving to hear a collection described in the terms that you use. The amount of 'time' and thought that has gone into choosing each and every one of these pieces is apparent.
I echo many of the collecting 'philosophies' that you describe, and I often wonder if others would understand some of my choices too, but you explain them very eloquently. Some of your criteria would come in a different order for me - like having exhibition backs to view the movement. For example, my choice for the Reverso is the Grand Date and my choice for a chronograph is the Datograph, because I enjoy studying and contemplating the movement and would spend too much time wondering what was hidden away from view if I couldn't do so.
"Like stroking silk with a fur glove". Very evocative and sensual. I too enjoy winding my manual watches. The 8-day Reverso gets wound every Sunday afternoon and I like to find a comfortable chair in a sunny location with a glass of Shiraz to enjoy the process. Sort of like a mental preparation for the week ahead.
That AP quantieme perpetual is definitely an undiscovered gem and the Chopard just oozes elegance, even with a date! Thanks again for your post. I smiled at your line that repeaters "didn't really speak to you" and it's nice to find a kindred spirit in watch collecting half way across the world.
Kind regards
Andrew
